Route 66 Revisited

September 22, 2010 § 3 Comments

So I met the Dean of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was visiting Beverley, and I looked up where he came from. The place names around looked familiar….and he confirmed that his Cathedral was on Route 66.

I thought it would be fun to do a Route 66 for the Diocese of York – or some of it. So here, as performed once only at the Diocesan Conference, is a homage to Yorkshire’s roads.

If you ever plan to motor west
You go my way, take the highway that’s the best.
You’ll get your kicks on the A166

Well it goes from Bridlington to York.
At 41 miles it’s a long walk.
Just get your kicks on the A166.

It goes through Burton Agnes, down through Ruston Parva
Driffield’s not a city but it’s oh so pretty
You’ll see Wetwang and Fimber, Thixendale, Fridaythorpe;
Bishop Wilton, Bugthorpe, don’t forget Full Sutton;
Stamford Bridge, Gate Helmsley,
The Park and Ride at Grimston Bar.

And if you want to come from the Far East
You can drive on the road they call the Beast,
But you’ll be fine on the A1079.

From Kingston upon Hull to York it goes,
38 speed cameras add to your woes.
Yes, you’ll get fined on the A1079.

You take the Beverley by-pass, go through Bishop Burton,
You won’t get eaten if you stop in Market Weighton,
You’ll see Pocklington, Barmby Moor follows on;
Wilberfoss and Kexby, Dunnington’s a detour,
Right up to the Park and Ride,
That one, you know, at Grimston Bar.

You’ll get your kicks on the A166
And you’ll get fined on the A1079.

    Waiting for the next verse, travelling up the A19

  • Paul Trathen says:

    Like it! 🙂

    Of course, down in this part of the world we already have Billy Bragg to thank for his timeless tribute to the A13 from east London to Southend!

    Enjoy!

  • Paul Trathen says:

    In case it’s hard for your Yorkshire ears to make out the lyrics(!?!), they are….

    If you ever have to go to Shoeburyness
    Take the A road, the okay road that’s the best
    Go motorin’ on the A13

    If you’re looking for a thrill that’s new
    Take in Fords, Dartford Tunnel and the river too
    Go motorin’ on the A13

    It starts down in Wapping
    There ain’t no stopping
    By-pass Barking and straight through Dagenham
    Down to Grays Thurrock
    And rather near Basildon
    Pitsea, Thundersley, Hadleigh, Leigh-On-Sea,
    Chalkwell, Prittlewell
    Southend’s the end

    If you ever have to go to Shoeburyness
    Take the A road, the okay road that’s the best
    Go motorin’ on the A13
